LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
1 Attachment(s)
Has anybody heard of this company or seen these LRB lowers?
$80 each, they say they'll be ready for shipment between May and June. I placed an order. I felt like I had to for that price. Not a bad looking lower... Attachment 66092 |
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
Sounds like a great deal. There was a group buy at m14tfl.com last year, and they were $87 each. I'm still waiting on LRB to call and finalize everything, but since they have a good reputation I'm not sweating it. I have a lonely Stag southpaw kit anxiously awaiting one of these LRB lowers.
LRB is well known, first and foremost, for their cream of the crop forged M14 receivers. |
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
That's not polymer, is it? I've heard that the BATFE is foaming at the mouth over polymer AR lowers.
|
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
cast or forged? too cheap if you asked me.
|
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
www.coldwarshooters.net has them in stock and for sale. The price is 169.99 and they are forged.
|
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
What do you mean forged? aren't they machined out of blocks?
|
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
Some are machined out of blocks, most aren't. I bought a cheap Doublestar lower and the hammer and trigger pin holes were a few thousandths over spec. Ended up with a mushy trigger.

You are describing machining which is not the same. $169 to $200 is the range for good quality lowers. |
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forged
AR15 receivers can be made from three different methods of working the metal. They are forging, casting and billet. Castings are not as strong as the forged or billet method. You can argue forever on whether the forged receiver or billet receiver is stronger. My opinion is to stick with either forged or billet receivers. |

Looks like they make some real nice M14's Texan. |
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
Where to buy the rest of the gun?
|
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
The forging process beats all the molecules closer together. Though, I imagine you could forge aluminum with a big hammer.
Both types are still machined from blocks (billets) of aluminum. |

Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
Nice - thanks for clearing that up. I had figured all blocks were pretty much the same - I guess not!
I had always assumed "forging" mean to pound/pour haha. I guess that would be cast. |
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
thats dirt cheap for lowers right now....ive never heard of the brand but its about $100 bucks less then alot of the stuff out there now

If you have the time to wait, I recommend ordering the CAR-15 kit from JT Distributing. It is the best value on the market, and mine went together flawlessly. |

I'm thinking SPR, 24" 6.5 Grendel, 14.5" HK piston upper, or 6.8 SPC M4 for one of these.:adore: |
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
LRB makes a very good product I have a few of there lowers and uppers
|
Re: LRB AR15 Stripped Lowers
Could someone elaborate on the processes used for making these? I'm a metal worker and I just assumed from the lowers I've seen they were all cast with finish machine work done on them for things like threads and the various machined features.
Why is the BATFE foaming over polymer lowers? How much are billet machined recievers?(seems like an expensive process for what is essentially a FCG housing+stock attatchment point.) Would be much cheaper with out all of the unnecessary surface features, and simply functional features machined. |

The lowers are forged. This gets the outside profile pretty well squared away leaving only minimal machine work to complete. I have seen a few lowers made from billets. Both were homemade projects. They both looked very unique. It would be a fun project IMHO. I'm not sure what a block of aluminum would run you, but I have seen the aluminum forgings for sale for $20-$25. For mass production it's cheaper to use the forgings. |
